Title:  The Legacy of Service: The generations of Pines family have served in military.

Author: Perry Stein

Source: The Miami Herald

The topic of the article is about a man named Bolivar Perez- Rios who was in the military and how he fought for our nation and later on passed it down to his relatives.

The main idea of the article is about Bolivar Perez- Rios and what happened to him during his time in the army and how he later persuaded his kids and grandkids to do the same. The article is stated.

The author’s purpose for writing this article is to inform kids about a man named Bolivar Perez- Rios and what he did during serving in the military and how he wanted his family members to share the same experience he did.

The author’s perspective in this article is objective/subjective (biased) is subjective because he shows the view of one person that was part of the army. He didn’t share with the reader all the people that helped in the military and their personal lives. The author is unbiased because he didn’t emphasis with the reader his personal emotions.

The pattern of organization of the article is cause and effect because it showed how Bolivar Perez Rios hard work in the military and how he loved serving there (cause). Later on he passed it down to his grandkids and kids and taught them the great passion for being in the military is a good concept in life (effect.)

The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is to show the start of a person’s view in the army and what his memories were, to how he slowly put this huge opportunity in generations.  That pattern explained the reader the main reason the article was written.

The text features included in the article are photos to see the person’s face and actually imagine all those things he did in mind, captions to explain what exactly the person is doing in the picture, and organizing the paragraphs in one understandable pattern so the reader will stay with author while reading the article.

This article is about (a summary in your own words) a brave man named Bolivar Perez Rios and how he was in the army, how he went through tough and easy occasions like going to the hospital because of a bomb or doing great things to our army while serving there. After he finished fighting in the army, Bolivar persuaded his kids to work in the army too and have a great time being there while also knowing you’re a true hero to the world.

The significance (importance) of this article is to teach kids about what one man did to fight all his might in our country and how all those helpful things he did might have hurt him in some fights, but it was all worth it for showing the world his experience and also passing it down in a generation.

What I learned from this article is new vocabulary words that were tough to figure out while reading and also I learned from the article is that one thing can affect another. Bolivar did major things in the army and it affected his relatives to do the exact same things to their nation.

What I liked about this article is that the author stated quotes that Bolivar said. Every quote means something and I like to read quotes and figure out what they mean. Later when I’ll be older, I would want to do a big thing to my country, I can use quotes famous people said and hopefully make up some out of my own experience.

What I did not like about this article is that the author didn’t share his own opinions with the readers. I disliked that part because a writer has to conclude his feelings about what he wrote so the reader will have at least an idea about why the author wrote specifically about what he published.

People who were in army or their relatives were in the army should read this article because that way they will learn about  how other people served, what they were like, and how they can compare their life with that person. Kids whom relatives are or were in the army could learn examples of what kind of experience they need to have in order to be there and survive the bad things that could happen.

This article reminds me of (text to-self) because I’m probably not saving the world but I can show great examples to my little cousins and  my neighbors by telling them that school is important, always be a nice person, or share with your siblings. That same thing Bolivar did with his family but it was depended on a different subject.

(text-to-text) I read a biography called Ilan Ramon and he was also in the Air Force planning his future to be an astronaut. He sadly died because he didn’t make it safely to Earth. The good thing is that his great accomplishments did rub off on his kids to be smart and successful like their father.

(text-to-world) This article reminds me of the world because a lot of people are or were in army and they are serving there for a couple of years to slowly make their nations better and stronger. As a result, they are affecting their kids to do those steps they did slowly as they get older.
