Reader's Journal #11

Dear Stav,
This week we were to read a memoir and I read "Sold". It's author is Patricia McCormick.  I think she did a excellent job writing this memoir and the person who this book is about,  sadly faced a tough childhood.
I think that a lot of people should read this book because it's very interesting to learn about someone's personal life. Stav, I didn't get to finish this book but I will still share with you what I have read so far.
The characters in the book are Lakshmi (she's the girl who this book is about), Ama, (Her mother), Lakshmi's stepfather, Gita (a village neighbor), Uncle Husband ( it's Lakshmi's uncle.), Auntie Bilma ( Lakshmi's aunt), Mumtaz (a woman who controls the city), Krishna, (a boy Lakshmi wants to marry to), and Pushpa, Shahanna, David Beckham, and the rest of the people in the city, are the people that Lakshmi met there. You guys will understand everything about the characters and the things that are occurring slowly as I get to the rest of the events.
The setting takes place in a small village called Nepal. I'm guessing it took place long time ago, according to the way and the things the characters are doing and they way they are behaving in the book. The weather is very hot and sunny and that's making life very hard in the village.
The plot of the book Sold is about a thirteen year old girl named Lakshmi. She and her family are living in a village called Nepal. All the people in the villages are working very hard there and it's very hard even to live in that place. You guys are probably wondering why a thirteen year old wanted to marry a boy like I mentioned in the list of characters. I think that back then, young girls married at the age 13 and begin doing all the things women do in the village. Lakshmi helped her mother out all times while the men played , ate, and drank. Each day that past, life in the village wasn't easy for Lakshmi and her family. The weather was hot and sunny and they didn't get any water to drink or  use to cook. That kind of climate that is occurring, is called monsoons and it washed all the family's crops. Because that tragic thing happened in the village, Lakshmi's stepfather decided to send Lakshmi away to a city to get a job and support the family. While being taking away to the city, Lakshmi was guided by Auntie Bilma and Uncle Husband. They were people that Lakshmi never met before in her life and somehow the author mentioned that they were her aunt and uncle. I truly didn't understand why. When she arrived in the city, that's where life became very hard and tough for Lakshmi. Until what I read so far, it said that Mumtaz, the woman who controls the city, beat her to death, and Lakshmi also got sexually abused by men. When I read that part, I cried. It was very sad but she couldn't do anything about it because she has to do everything that is asked of her to do and if she obeys , then her debt will be over as soon as she done completing everything she needs to do. Lakshmi also met there some girls like Shahanna and Pushpa. She shared rooms with them after being in a room by herself while getting abused and starved to death. That's all I read up to and next week on my journal, I will update the rest of the information and events.:D
The conflict of this book is that in Lakshmi's village, all the crops are ruined because of a type of weather called monsoons is acting up there and Lakshmi was sent to a city to get a job.  She was forced to do that in order to support her family. So far, she's suffering badly, but hopefully she will get through it.
I don't know yet what conflict resolution is because I didn't finish reading the book. Hopefully it will be a happy resolution and not a sad one.
My personal feelings about the book are that it's first a really sad story. Lakshmi is a good girl and she doesn't deserve to be treated so cruelly like that. Beside by reactions about the book, I think that the author knows how to write an extraordinary book to make the reader emotional. I know this author also wrote the book Cut and it sounds like a great book because on top of the cover page it says, " THE BEST- SELLING AUTHOR OF CUT". I think I'll give this book a chance and read it. :)]
My favorite part of this book is that Lakshmi is brave enough to handle such tough situations in the cities that she's willing to stay there until her it's going to be over. I know if it was me, I would run away even is it's risky because I don't want anybody treating me so awfully like they do to her. I think she's a strong girl and she will get through it.
My least favorite part is to read about how Lakshmi is abused so harshly and how no one there is feeding her. This is very sad because she didn't do anything bad to those people, in fact, she's listening and doing all the things that are instructed her to do so. I am against child abuse and I think its wrong and just past beyond mean to do those things to a kid!!!!
Stavy, that concludes my summary about the book and I hoped you understood everything I wrote about it. Next week, I will finish writing about the story and if you were really interested in the book, read it yourself!!:) Stavush, I love you and Happy Birthday!<3
Love,
Adi<3

  1. Dear Adi,
I really like your pattern of organization of how you write very perspective and neat. You also do a good job with vocabulary choices...keep it up.1st question...How do you relate to Lakshme? 2nd question...What would you do if you had Laksme's position of life? 3rd question...If you were Laksme would you run away or try to find another family? I suggest that you next time skip a line for each paragraph like characters, plot, and all that.

    Wow! I LOVE your RJ!
    I love reading your journals!
    Some Questions:
    1. If you were Laksme right now what would you be doing?
2.How do you relate to him?
3.What was your favorite part reading?
Next time i suggest you write less so you wont be overwhelmed, but its still great!

  3. Dear Itay,
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that you liked my blog.
I can't think of a way to relate to Lakshmi because her traits and actions were extremely different than mine and the way people treat her is cruel and disgusting, I get treated nicely with everyone around me.
If I was in the same position as Lakshmi I would first obey what my boss is telling me to do and it's hard for me to imagine what else I would especially because I'm not in her position.
Running away or finding another family is part of running away that's first and I would try to escape without getting caught and beated up because the horrible things that happened to those girls so just a disaster and I just can't imagine what they went through.
Your suggestion is good, but I already do skip lines so I have no idea what are you talking. about.
Thank you Itay for those questions.
    Love,
    Adi<3

  4. Dear Dana,
The fact that you liked my blog makes me feel proud of myself. Thank you for that!<3
If I was Lakshmi I would also try to run away because I know that I don't want anybody to treat me with disrespect and cruel behavior.
I can't relate to her because everyone around respects me and are very kind to me. The way people treated Lakshmi was just disgusting and above mean!
My favorite part of reading was finding new vocabulary words because I want my English to be not just good but super good. I especially like finding new words because that also helps my in my writing.
I like your suggestion and you're right, but I write like that so my reader can get a more clear visulization about the book.
Thank you Dana for those questions!:)
    LOVE YOUU!<3
